Dog Snood Guide

Everything You Need to Know About Dog Snoods

What Is a Dog Snood?

If you've ever wondered what a dog snood is, you're not alone. Snoods have become increasingly popular with dog owners looking for a practical, comfortable, and stylish way to protect their dogs' ears and necks.

At Snoods4Dudes, every snood is handmade in Northumberland and designed with comfort, functionality and style in mind. Whether you're looking for a cosy winter snood, a lightweight summer snood or a longer style designed specifically for sighthounds, this guide will help you choose the right option for your dog.

A dog snood is a soft fabric tube that fits comfortably around your dog's neck and ears.  Originally popular with long-eared breeds, snoods help keep ears protected, clean, and out of the way during everyday activities.

Today, snoods are used by a wide range of breeds for warmth, comfort, grooming, mealtimes and even cooling during warmer weather.

Why Do Dogs Wear Snoods?

Dog owners use snoods for many different reasons.

  • Mealtimes - For dogs with long ears, a snood helps keep ears out of food and water bowls, reducing mess and helping ears stay clean and dry.

  • Grooming - Many owners use snoods during grooming appointments to keep ears tidy and comfortably out of the way.

  • Warmth and Comfort - Short-coated breeds, particularly sighthounds, often benefit from an extra layer around the neck and ears during colder weather.

  • Travel Some dogs find a snood comforting when travelling, while others simply enjoy the warmth and gentle fit.

  • Style Let's be honest – they look rather fabulous too!

  • Comfort and reassurance - Some owners find them particularly useful during fireworks, thunderstorms, travel, grooming appointments, or other situations where their dog may benefit from a little extra reassurance

Cooling Snoods for Dogs

Lightweight jersey snoods are a popular choice during warmer weather.

Simply soak the snood in cool water, gently squeeze out any excess water, and place it in the fridge or a cool box before use. The fabric helps provide a cooling effect around the neck, making them ideal for warm days, car journeys, and outdoor adventures.

Cooling snoods are particularly popular with:

  • Sighthounds

  • Spaniels

  • Setters

  • Long-eared breeds

  • Dogs that enjoy summer walks

Our jersey snoods are lightweight, breathable, and comfortable to wear throughout the year.

Winter Fleece Snoods

Comfort and Reassurance

Many dogs enjoy the gentle, snug feeling of wearing a snood. Some owners find them particularly useful during fireworks, thunderstorms, travel, grooming appointments, or other situations where their dog may benefit from a little extra reassurance.

A snood can also be lightly misted with your dog's usual calming spray before use, allowing a familiar scent to stay close to them. Combined with the soft, close-fitting design, this can help create a comforting routine for some dogs during stressful situations.

While every dog is different, many owners find that a snood, alongside other comfort measures, helps their dog feel more settled and relaxed.

As owners of rescue dogs ourselves, we know that sometimes the smallest comforts can make a big difference.

Sherpa Fleece Lined Snoods

When temperatures drop, fleece snoods provide an extra layer of warmth and comfort.

Our fleece snoods feature a soft Sherpa fleece lining designed to help keep dogs cosy during colder months.

Perfect for:

  • Winter walks

  • Chilly mornings

  • Older dogs

  • Short-coated breeds

  • Dogs that feel the cold

Sighthounds often benefit from a slightly longer snood design due to their long necks.

Our long-length snoods are especially popular with:

  • Greyhounds

  • Whippets

  • Lurchers

  • Salukis

  • Galgos

As owners of three rescue sighthounds ourselves, we understand how important comfort and fit are when designing neckwear specifically for these special breeds.
