Measuring For A Martingale Collar

Martingale collars are designed to sit comfortably when relaxed and gently tighten when needed to help prevent dogs from backing out of their collar.

Because a traditional martingale collar slips over your dog's head rather than fastening with a buckle, getting the right size depends on two measurements.

The collar needs to be large enough to pass comfortably over the widest part of your dog's head, including the ears, but it must also adjust down to fit securely and comfortably around the neck.

For the best fit, take these two simple measurements using a soft measuring tape.

Head Size — Widest Part

Measure around the widest part of your dog's head, including the ears.

This tells you how large the collar needs to open so that you can comfortably slip it over your dog's head when putting it on and taking it off.

Your dog's head measurement therefore needs to fall within the adjustment range of the collar you choose.

Collar Position — Neck Measurement

Measure around your dog's neck where you want the martingale collar to sit.

The tape should sit comfortably against the neck without being too tight.

This measurement tells you how small the collar needs to adjust once it is over your dog's head.

The right size needs to accommodate both measurements — it must fit over the head and then adjust down correctly around the neck.

Martingale Collar Size Guide

Small: 10–14 inches
Medium: 14–18 inches
Large: 18–22 inches
XL: 22–26 inches

When choosing your size, check that both your dog's head measurement and neck measurement can be accommodated by the collar's adjustment range.

If you're unsure which size will give your dog the best fit, please get in touch with both measurements and I'll be happy to help.

Tips for the Best Fit

  • The collar should slip comfortably over your dog's head without having to force it over the ears.

  • Once adjusted, you should be able to comfortably fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck when relaxed.

  • The martingale should gently tighten when your dog pulls, but it shouldn't choke.

  • When correctly adjusted, the two metal rings on the control loop shouldn't meet when the collar tightens.

  • The collar should sit comfortably without sliding or twisting.

  • If your dog's head and neck measurements appear to fall across two sizes, please contact me before ordering.

An Important Safety Note

A martingale collar is designed to be used when walking your dog and shouldn't be left on your dog unattended.
