Why Do Dogs Wear Snoods? A Guide to Comfort, Warmth & Protection

If you live with a sighthound, a short-haired breed or a dog with long ears, you may already know that some dogs appreciate a little extra protection from the elements.

Dog snoods are sometimes seen as simply a cute accessory, but they can have a genuinely practical purpose — from helping to keep exposed necks and ears warm to keeping long ears clean at mealtimes.

Living with sighthounds has taught me that the little things can make a big difference to their comfort. Their fine coats, exposed necks and wonderfully expressive ears aren't always ideally equipped for a cold, windy Northumberland morning!

Over the years, I've seen how something as simple as a well-fitting snood can add an extra layer of warmth and protection.

 What Is a Dog Snood?

A dog snood is a soft fabric covering designed to sit comfortably around a dog's neck. Many can also be gently pulled up to cover the ears when extra protection is needed.

Think of it as a neck warmer designed especially for dogs.

They're particularly popular with Greyhounds, Whippets, Lurchers and other sighthounds, but snoods can be useful for many breeds — especially dogs with short coats, slim necks or long ears.

Different fabrics also make snoods suitable for different times of year. A warm fleece-lined snood can provide extra insulation on chilly walks, while lightweight jersey snoods offer a softer, lighter layer for milder days.

Why do sighthounds wear snoods?

Sighthounds such as Greyhounds, Whippets and many Lurchers tend to have relatively fine coats and long, exposed necks. Some also have very little fur around their neck, chest and ears. That can make them more susceptible to feeling the effects of cold, wet and windy weather than a heavily coated breed.

A snood adds an extra layer around these exposed areas without the bulk of another coat. And because a snood can often be pulled up over the ears, it can be particularly useful on those bitterly cold or windy walks when a sighthound's ears suddenly seem to disappear!

Warmth on cold and windy walks

This is probably the reason most people first discover dog snoods.

A warm snood can help provide additional insulation around the neck and, when needed, the ears.

For our own dogs, snoods simply become part of the winter-walk wardrobe alongside their coats.

Different dogs will naturally tolerate cold weather differently, so a snood isn't something every dog needs. But for fine-coated dogs that visibly feel the cold, it can provide a useful extra layer of comfort.

Protection for long ears

Snoods aren't just for sighthounds.

They can also be extremely practical for dogs with long or heavily feathered ears.

Pulling a snood gently over the ears can help keep them out of:

• Food bowls

• Water bowls

• Mud and wet grass

• Grooming products

For some dogs, they're particularly useful at mealtimes, helping to keep ears clean and dry without having to tie or clip them out of the way.

Can a snood help an anxious dog?

You may hear dog owners say that their dog seems calmer or more settled while wearing a snood.

Some dogs certainly appear to enjoy the warmth and familiar feel of one, and a snood can become part of a reassuring routine — particularly for dogs that have worn one regularly.

However, a snood isn't a treatment for anxiety or noise sensitivity and shouldn't be used as a substitute for appropriate behavioural or veterinary support.

If your dog dislikes having clothing around their neck or ears, never force them to wear one. Comfort always comes first.

Can dogs wear snoods in summer?

Yes — but choose the fabric and situation carefully.

A thick fleece snood designed for winter isn't appropriate on a warm summer's day.

A lightweight, breathable jersey snood can still be useful in milder weather, particularly for keeping long ears clean or simply as a lightweight neck covering.

As with any item of dog clothing, it's important to consider the temperature, activity level and individual dog and remove the snood if they become too warm.

How should a dog snood fit?

A good snood should feel comfortably snug without being tight.

It shouldn't restrict your dog's breathing or movement, and your dog should be able to lower, turn and lift their head normally.

Too loose and it may continually slip down; too tight and it won't be comfortable.

Measuring around the widest part of your dog's neck before ordering is the best way to find the right size.

For sighthounds, it's also worth considering the length of the snood. A longer snood gives more coverage over that characteristically long neck and can usually be pulled up over the ears when needed.

Choosing the right snood

Think about when your dog is most likely to wear it.

For colder weather:Look for a warm, soft fabric with enough length to protect the neck and potentially cover the ears.

For everyday and milder weather:A lightweight jersey snood gives you a less bulky option.

For long ears and mealtimes:Choose something soft and comfortably fitted that will hold the ears gently without restricting your dog.

Above all, watch your dog. Some absolutely love wearing their snoods; others may prefer to go without.
